Case Study 3: Abeno Harukas

At 300m above ground, Abeno Harukas stands as the tallest high-rise building in Japan and offers a glimpse of the future for vertical cities. This next-generation multi-purpose commercial building utilizes the latest technologies and excels in such aspects as energy savings, environmental consideration, and architectural design. Various facilities include a department store, hotel, offices, and an art museum.
Daikin was responsible for air conditioning the corridor of the "Harukas 300" observation deck, which has become a famous tourist attraction, and the sales floors of the department store.
To meet the high aspirations of Abeno Harukas for energy savings and environmental responsibility, Daikin installed its VRV system and fan coil units to give greater installation flexibility and ensure comfortable living spaces.
As the industry leader in energy savings, the Daikin VRV system adapts to diverse building situations with a variety of model types and an ease of installation and was able to fully meet the distinctive needs of Japan's tallest building for high quality and comfortable air.
Daikin proposed its VRV system, which features industry-leading seasonal efficiency, outstanding energy savings, and installation flexibility, and Daikin fan coil units, which further simplify installation while reducing costs and increasing energy savings. Comfortable air environments were created corresponding to installation requirements and expectations for the observation deck and department store.
To lower the energy needed to upwardly convey chilled water 300m from an underground heat source and provide air comfort to varying conditions, Daikin introduced the VRV multi-split type air conditioning system to the observation deck on the top floor. Slotted air outlets were installed to the ceiling to preserve the field of vision in the floor-to-ceiling glass design.
The VRV outdoor units were installed in the mechanical room on the 56th floor located approximately 270m above ground. To effectively take in fresh air, the building windows have openings to allow heat to escape. Special ducts were constructed from the top of the outdoor units and extend upward towards these openings to discharge heat from the outdoor unit to outside the building. An optional water spray system was also equipped to cool the outdoor units for even greater energy savings.
Fan coil units were installed to the sales area of the Kintetsu’s Main Store Abeno Harukas. In addition to energy savings, the fan coil units were selected to perform comprehensive air conditioning while helping to maintain store ambiance. The high-performance coils designed for large temperature differences decreased the amount of circulating chilled water and were significant in lowering installation expense.
